Transfer Case / XDrive Fluids?

Anyone know what transfer case fluid our trucks use?

I seem to recall that Dextron III is only for pre-XDrive transfer cases...
I believe that XDrive models require a slightly different fluid.

Dlrs have it as PN BMW transfer case oil - TF 0870, and from perusing,
I don't think there is a substitute.

true - sorry, I didn't look at what year. I have pre X-drive. I just replaced my transfer case and front / rear diff fluids a few weekends ago.

Yes, facelifted models have X-drive.

There was a comment in TIS that in case of fault code 54C6 transfer case oils should be changed. No idea of normal schedule, though.

Judging by the picture on ECS, you only need 1 quart. Facelift models need the BMW fluid and should reset the adaptations via DIS after fluid change.

Personally my driveline fluids get swapped every 50k, its cheap insurance to do so (diffs, manual trans, transfer case)

I had mine changed at purchase, 81k miles, given absence of evidence of earlier changes. Redline, plus the lubromoly gear lube, in the diffs, bmw in the xdrive, and redline in the manual tranny ... as many miles as I'm putting on mine, I may wait til 150k, instead of following RB's very reasonable suggestion of every 50k miles ....
