Solenoids can be tested when removed from transmission. I am not aware of any other testing method. I suggest your first step should be to check for error codes associated with the transmission or have a good transmission shop diagnosis your problem. I would not be buying any parts at this point.

As it was pointed out earlier, 4.8 X used a Zf 6Hp26 trans and early 4.4 X used a ZF 5Hp24 trans. If your trans is a 6 spd it is the 6Hp26. If your trans is a 5spd it is the Zf 5Hp25 trans.

If the trans acts normal when it is cold, but has a delay when it is at operating temperature it is probably a fluid pressure issue. As the trans temp increases, the fluid temp also increases and with ATF the higher the temp, the lower the viscosity of the fluid. If there is a leak within the trans the thinner viscosity will not be able to maintain pressure unless the engine is rev which most driver will do if the vehicle is not moving backward. Reving the engine will spin the trans pump faster which in turn will create more fluid pressure which will allow the trans to engage reverse.

Mine is later 4.4i and uses the 6hp26... will get back to you on the delay going from reverse to forward. Though I know I don't give the truck any gas until reverse engages after the 2-3 seconds. I just wait for it to engage before any gas.

Valve body seems to also be an issue with the ZF 6HP26 trans. Rebuilt valve body can also be brought on Amazon.

The good news is that FORD also use this trans in a lot of their SUV so finding a shop to rebuild it should be easy.

Same here... is it possible this is normal operating condition? It's more of an irritation than an actual problem. I just budget a second or two extra when reversing... not a huge deal.

Even the irritation is not huge, it's just something to make note of when reversing.

I would say go look for a similar car for sale at a used car lot or dealer and go for a test drive. You should be able to tell if your trans is acting normal or not.
