Trans experts opinions needed- kind of a long story.. sorry in advance

So, I have an 01 X, with the 4.4. 140,000 miles. Overall, this thing is in excellent shape, but the tranny is driving me nuts.

It's been acting up for quite a while. I had the stealership do a software update a while back, but it was still a bit wonky.

I did a fluid and filter change about 5k ago, and it didn't really change much.

What its doing is this: Hot or cold, I can be driving along at 30-35 mph, and it will just downshift into second and stay there,. It wont shift up, even if I try and shift it with the tiptronic.

So, back to the stealership today. They said it was a quart low of fluid, which I kind of doubt, since I checked it 1000 miles ago, and it was full. But OK.

Then they tell me, "t shows gear monitoring faults, indicating slippage, and a fault code for the trans oil temp sensor" (the internal one). Can the two be related?

I've heard of similar symptoms with trannies downshifting trying to get cooler fluid into the trans, but mine will do it cold, or hot, doesn't matter.

My question is, Should I bother doing the internal temp sensor and harness and new fluid? Or with the "slippage" is the trans done?

The temp sensor could be the original problem but continuing to drive the X with this problem probably created other problems. If you want too keep the X fix the temp sensor harness.

If the temp sensor is bad it could be indicating to the EGS and DME that the ATF is too hot no matter if the actual ATF fluid is hot or cold, so the EGS/DME will down shift the car to 2nd gear so that the trans pump is pumping more fluid through the trans and cooler.

If you did a drain and fill and didn't monitor the trans fluid temp or did the drain and fluid after you got the trans hot and didn't let the car sit over night, it is probable that you didn't fill the trans correctly. ATF expand with heat and a lot of that fluid is in the torque converter so that fluid never get exchange and if it is hot it has expanded so it will reflect a low level once it cool and the ATF shrinks.

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

As far as the fluid level, I followed the recommended procedure to make sure it was at temp, level, etc. The DIY's on this and another board are really nice to have.

Turns out, my filter kit from Bav Auto came with a crappy cork gasket. I'll get the right one this time.

Any advice on where to get the harness at a reasonable price?
