Back to your car.One thing I can't see in your symptoms and feedback ,is whether the engine made the ticking noise before you changed the oil???
Regarding the oil you used,it's fine and the guys that favour Mobil1(Great oil ,used it in my M3E30)are mainly guys with M3s High revving and the viscosity is 10w60.
As the guys here already mentioned ,the Bmw recommended is 5w30 0r 0W40.The brand is commercial,so as long choose a known brand with Bmw specs, that's fine.I use BP7000 5W30.eventhough at work (Bmw dealer),we have to use Castrol Edge 5w30,so it's just a commercial thing.Been rumours that. Bmw will be changing to Shell .
A ticking noise can occur on higher mileage engines when you change from a higher viscosity oil,say from 5w30 to a lower viscosity, like 0w30,due to the latter being thinner and doesn't "fill in the gaps"of the
Wear and tear of the high mileage engine parts, where a thicker oil will and thus stop the ticking noise and excessive oil smoke.
Don't know if this is true in your case as I don't know what oil was in your engine previously.
This is only thing I can say at the moment, but if it's not your oil change, you need to look at other ticking noise possibilities:-
1.A loose or faulty injector (Quite common and something I already sorted for a member here)
2.Tappets (maybe spring is stuck preventing it from filling with oil)
3.Cracked manifold (facelift only and you should smell exhaust gases)

Look forward to your answer
Thanks Powers1, I was hoping you were around to offer advice to Leeg.. RE: my performance issues... Still the same, but that's another story for another day

I also did the crankcase breather upgrade to vortex type, I'm not the tallest person so I did climb into engine bay to see and reach rear hex bolt on air filter cover will pull all the plastics off tomorrow Fire her up and see if can pinpoint ticking. Just tried to give her some loving ha.
Well, logically if its your oil ,because the previous owner used a thicker oil, then its not a problem and you can use that oil for next 7000 miles or so and then refill with 5W30.

What I would do ,is go over all you have done when you did the oil change.
Make sure you have tighten everything especially the 2 bolts on the breather case and the airbox.Yes,that rear bolt is a bummer to get to even for a 6 footer like me ..Check that you have fitted the oil filter properly and the "o" rings are in place.

One point that many are not aware of the vortex filter ,is that it allows more oil vapours to pass to inlet manifold, whilst the "toilet roll" type filter is more restrictive (better). The reason why BMW changed the filter type was because people with pre-facelift 3.0D "forgot" to replace it periodically (every 20,000 miles) and in high mileage cars it blocked oil breathing, resulting in eventual engine damage,so to be safe BMW fitted one that doesnt block oil breathing but lets more oil vapoour to turbo and inet pipes .You can see more oil in the pipes than on an older 3.0D with the toilet roll filter. The vortex type also gives more oil consumption
The vortex type could also make you hear a different engine noise at tickover.
We still fit the toilet roll filter on high mileage cars and cars that do a lot of town driving. We fit the vortex on more recent cars and those that do more motorway driving. This is ideal!Hope I am being clear !

Hope its one of the two and not something that I mentioned previously that coincidentally popped up after your oil change.Lets hope not

HI Rob
Persistance is a virtue(or is it patience!Both,I think )
Mine is diagnostically fault free, apart from front and rear light registered errors because I have DEPOs and the facelift tail lights, where I had to swap the pin positioning fir them to work .Stupid BMW DIS tells me both my front and rear lights are out and they are all working fine.Maybe its too clever and knows I didnt have specific OE equipment fitted
Other issue I have is a slight lack of power from 1200 to 1800 and I know its the MAF and I have a new Bosch item to fit but been a few months and I havent got round to it yet .TTTT!No errors at all on diagnostics but because its only a slight power loss its not enough to even register an intermediate fault. So whats the point of diagnostics that dont tell you when you got a power loss and misinform you about your lights
Wish i could help you further with your problem.Would sort it out here ,because we would replace all sensors one by one until we found the culprit.
Nice weekend mate
