I know, long-winded, but my Q: any recommendations on good pads with minimal dust, good stopping power, and no/very little squeeling? Think owner just made wrong choice of pads?... thanks in advance.

Might not be the pads used but something with the installation or even the bedding not being done properly.
I'm sure someone will chime in with good pads for these. On my other BMW's I've used Hawk with good success.
