Rookie Error: Took my X5 on the beach, couldn't get DSC to switch off.

Hello,

I've been a lurker on Xoutpost for some time, and have always managed to find my answers and avoid ever needing to ask a question...

Last weekend I took my 2006 3.0D X5 on the beach. We didn't get very far. Before venturing on the sand, I dropped the tyre pressure, and turned off the DSC. The 4x4 orange light illuminated in my dash - I thought we were good to go.

The DSC light started flickering on and off, and then cut my power, and put the brakes on. Essentially, I was stuck on the beach with only the rear wheels spinning. I tried a few different things - holding the button down for ages, turning the car on and off, holding the button down for ages again. The button became unresponsive... Nothing was lighting up on the dash, and the little yellow light wasn't appearing on the button itself.

Can anyone advise if this may be a faulty DSC switch, or if there's more to it when it comes to turning off all the systems that interfere with the car? I read somewhere on the interwebs, someone suggested removing ABS fuse, though couldn't find any concrete instructions or evidence...

I have seen E53's on the beach before, so I know it's possible!

Most humiliating part of all. A Nissan Juke cruised past me while I was waiting for a tow...

Sounds like your DSC is faulty. Here's an E53 owner's manual that seems to indicate so (hit control F to search for DSC in the pdf):
