Hi,
Last weekend, the Check Engine light came on and it turned out to be P1434 (Misfire Cylinder 1 With Fuel Cut-off). I have an ODB II Bluetooth tool that I can clear the codes with. 1. Does this mean that cylinder #1 is not running anymore or was that just a temporary issue? 2. Is it safe to just remove the code? 3. Will it come back in case the the problem comes up again (thus indicating that I need to either replace the plug or the coil pack)? Thanks! 2005 BMW X5, 4.8is, ~64000 miles

Are you sure you typed the correct DTC "P" code? You can simply google "BMW OBD II P1434" to find more info about that code.
You can clear an OBD II code...but if the issue still exists...the sensor will continue to register the fault...so yes, it will come back if the problem is still there. The SES/CEL/MIL light illuminates when a sensor registers a fault twice....that's the way the OBD II system was designed (see the 2nd paragraph in the 3rd bullet in information below): ![]()

To answer your questions. 1, The DME shut off your #1 injector when the misfire was noticed. This is to prevent raw fuel from getting into the cat converter. Once you shut off the motor the DME reset and allowed the injector to operate normally. 2, Yes its ok to remove the code. 3, Yes, if the failure happens again you will get the light and the code will be stored. I reset the codes and they haven't come back yet (knock on wood).
I didn't know about the "has to happen twice before it triggers the SES/CEL/MIL" rule, interesting... The current spark plugs have ~30k miles on them, so I'll replace them as soon as the weather gets better - it'll be interesting to see what they look like (maybe that gives me a hint...) Thanks SarTech & Qsilver7!
