Liftgate not working
2008 BMW X5 E70
Liftgate suddenly stopped working. Will not open or close automatically. Latch releases but that is it. Red close button is lit. Have tried dash button, liftgate buttons, and remote button. Removed and inspected fuses 99 and 121. Both were good. Checked module for any moisture. Completely dry. I've watched every YouTube video and read several forum posts. Still searching. Any other diagnostics to try? I hate to just start replacing parts without knowing the exact problem. Thanks in advance for your help! |

Find the wiring diagram for the rear liftgate spindle drives, find out if they are properly getting driving voltage.... if everything checks out but they dont move, you've determined they are in fact bad.
Failed spindle drives (the plastic nut/parts tend to crack- especially if the gate is driven manually) is not a rare event |

One bad drive motor will cause a failure. The hard part is determining which is failing. I looked at all other causes, then determined one or both struts were bad, so I purchased a pair.
When disassembling, I could not move the passenger side strut at all, replaced it, and all is fine now. I keep the driver side strut as a spare. |

UPDATE
So all of a sudden it just started working and worked perfectly fine for a month or two. Then one day I pushed the button on the liftgate to open it. Worked perfectly. Loaded stuff into the back. Pushed the button to close it and "CLICK" nothing. Also the iDrive screen stopped working for a little while. It also happened before when the liftgate stopped working. Don't know what the connection between those two might be.

Have you checked under the rear deck for any water damage in all the modules there???????

Dry as a bone. No water damage.

Read up on the JBE aka Junction Box.... this unit may have a role in both issues... and it is a know component that can get corrupted and fail in odd/intermittent ways
FYI https://bimmerscan.com/bmw-front-electronic-module-fem/ search for "tailgate" Last edited by ard; 07-12-2022 at 03:30 PM. |
