i-drive screen went black, radio still functions

Hello every one, today as I started the car I noticed the i-drive screen go all red then black/off and it won't come back on. everything is functioning as far as I can tell (radio, bluetooth phone calls...) but the screen is still off. Called the dealer and they said it may need a new screen. Did a quick search online for the part and it is not a cheap part. Can anyone tell me if you have ran across this problem and what was done to fix it other than paying $2k to the dealer to replace the screen? My X5 is a 2011 e70 35i, October '10 build.
