The software update is going to run $400. There were absolutely no updates done to the original software so there are 23 modules that need to be updated.

This is going to take 9 hours on his scanner.

He charges $400 because the 9 hours on his scanner prevents him from working on other vehicles for that entire day. I'm splitting the cost w/ my friend selling to me, so I went ahead with it. Didn't think $200 was too bad for this...

Good thing I took it to my trusted mechanic for 3rd inspection:

-New oil leak found (fresh oil) - diagnosed as leaking from vacuum pump. Dealer has agreed to replace vacuum pump now, too.

-Rusted rear bolts on underside. Not big problem now, but could be in future. Dealer has also agreed to replace rusted bolts and washers. Mechanic recommended a spray to help with rust.

-A lot of oil residue was visible. He couldn't be sure (other than fresh oil) if it was a current problem, or residue from the gaskets that have been replaced. He put in DYE Oil Additive so he can check under UV Light if there are any other current leaks I should be aware of. Have to take car back to him in about 200-300 miles.

-He commented that "all of these e70 X5 engines are a piece of $hit"

Raises some concerns about future maintenance for sure. Happy that dealer (my friend) is willing to make it right for me before I make the jump to purchase...

Any comments or recommendations?

The eagle has landed in my garage!

Ended up going with the Route 66 Main Street warranty, $2,300 for 48 months/48,000 miles. With a zero $ deductible for major engine issues + valves and seals, it will provide me with enough peace of mind to justify the cost.

Thanks to everyone who responded here and helped me out. I had a big handful of issues taken care of by the dealer before my purchase that I never would've known about without these forums. Thank you!

The car drives incredible btw. The software update took care of the jerky transmission issue. So much fun to drive, and crazy torque. Love the tune of the sound of the V8!!!

Ok, let's start with the positive news. Loving the ride! Got the windows tinted yesterday and snapped a few pictures:

Now for the serious business:

The X5 was sitting from 10am to about 7pm when I got off work. Right after a cold start, I was sitting in parking lot making a phone call when I noticed a steam-looking substance coming out from under the hood. (I first noticed it about 2 mins after starting the engine.) It wasn't heavy at all, but it was enough to catch my eye. I popped hood, it was coming from the drivers side. It came out in intervals, small bit of steam...blow away in wind, nothing, then a small bit of steam.

Revving engine did not produce more or less of the steam. After the car continued running for 5-8 mins, as I was checking it, the problem subsided the steam emission ceased.

Is this normal? I need to check it again tomorrow morning when I start the vehicle.

It came from the driver's side, near the Red + battery cap. Actually it looked like it was coming from under the black plate fastened down plate to the left (as you look at engine from front) of the Red + battery cap. There are two metal fasteners that hold that plate down, the steam-substance looked like it was coming from between the two metal fasteners.

Attaching picture to help with my mechanically un-inclined description:

As you can metal fasteners over black cover, between fasteners looked to be the source.

I thought I could smell a little coolant, but it was faint and I'm not the best at diagnosing these problems. Any input??

No more issues with the steam at start up. It must've been the leftover coolant vaporizing from the coolant pipe replacement job.

Installed the LUX H8 160s today. Here's the best pic I could get at dusk, even though the inner rings are overexposed. It looks so sharp in person, really, about 50x better in person and the rings are perfectly defined.

I bought a 2011 5.0i M-sport with 40k miles and have had three major powertrain repairs, the first of which came at 48,000 miles. Between the remaining factory warranty and the CPO warranty I've had very little out of pocket cost but I would hate this car if I'd had to pony up for repairs. At $2800 I'd say you've paid for it with two repairs...I'd get it.
