Active Cruise Control

I was careful to choose the correct name for BMW's Adaptive Cruise Control system, i.e. that uses radar to maintain a set distance/time from the car in front - like Mercedes Distronic. Anyway...

Did the E70 ever have Active CC as an option? The E53 just had basic CC and as far as I can see the E70 got Dynamic CC, otherwise known as CC with Braking Function and presumably it's the F15 that finally gets Active CC. But was it actually available earlier? Are there any E70s with Active CC.

I was looking at a 2012 X5D just outside of Chicago that had active cruise control, which included the radar to keep a set distance away from the vehicle in front of you...that was adjustable with a little dial on the cruise control stalk. The manual for my current 2012 x5D also mentions it, so it was definitely available.

Interesting. Thanks for that. Anyone else seen it on earlier cars?

Just check ordering guides for various years; sometimes, options are discontinued or shortlived, like active steering.

Active cruise was never made available on the diesel in the USA.

Active CC (i.e. radar controlled) was available as early as the E38 7 series (1995-2001, not available on all model years). Those early systems did not have stop-n-go functionality. I have found that the option is rare no matter the BMW model.

I have even investigated retrofitting the feature on one or more of my BMW's and ultimately could not justify the cost. By the time you purchase the control modules, radar, grille, control stalk, clock spring, wiring, etc, and (sometimes) brake components and instrument cluster, it gets costly fast (and this assuming buying all parts used).

My UK 2012 X5 40d has active cruise control and I have to say I think it is brilliant makes long motorway journeys in traffic so much easier and less stressful, can't understand why so few cars have it, I will be very reluctant to get another car in the future that does not have it...
