Transmission/Extended Warranty/General Dealer LOL

Took the e70 into the dealer a couple weeks ago - the transmission had been acting a bit strange. It was slow to drop into reverse, occasionally stuck in gears, and lagged/surged sometimes off the line. I figured it needed solenoids based on some previous research. The dealer came back and said it needed a whole new transmission, and that the warranty would cover it. I said fine, didn't question it. When I picked it up on Friday I was chatting with the service tech - he confirmed my suspicion that they don't work on transmissions at all, only remove and replace. He told me, "that was a used transmission, as soon as you open it up and put new parts in there with used parts it will fail immediately." I just raised an eyebrow and said, "uh huh."

Anyway, if you've read my previous comments, I'm not a big believer in extended warranties. Seems to have come in handy in this case, but they did way more than they needed to.

The problems are gone except for the lagging/surging. That is improved but still happens on occasion. Anyone else have a similar issue? I'm now wondering if that's possibly the torque converter or somehow related to throttle. Giving it a little time to let the trans relearn my driving, but I'll take it back if the problem persists.

You had the extended BMW warranty or is this something left over from original warranty?

It is an extended warranty, Hendrick Autoguard (dealership is Hendrick), purchased by PO. FWIW that warranty gets really high marks against others from everyone I've talked to. This was the first time I've used it.

The dealer put me in a 320i with 75 miles on it as a loaner. I've had several 3 series and always loved them, but it took me a while to warm up to this one. It was pretty base and the turbo lag was very noticeable. After I got familiar with the car I quite liked it though. Drove it like a jet ski...which admittedly isn't all that different from norm for me. I'd be curious to drive one with a proper non-slushbox transmission and sports package.
