Which shop performed this service for you? There are a few indys that even refuse to complete this service. I know that Bimmersport doesn't want to touch transmission fluids. Do you notice a difference?

Autobahn east did the transmission drain/fill for me. Its a repeated drain fill, drain fill process to get most fluid out. I bought the materials from Oil change kit for 6HP26/28/32

I bought an extra 2 litres and we used about 7 1/2 litres doing the swap. I can't say that I notice the difference, but the old fluid was definitely due for a change

Found the left and right rear axles in Connecticut that should be at my mechanic by Thursday for $600. Better than the $1050 each that BMW charges

But what CAUSED it to seize?

Was the fluid pretty clean, no signs of wear and fine metal- just a catastrophic sudden internal part failure?

If nothing else, a fluid change would tell you "Oh crap, its toast" before it takes out other components.

Although, to be honest, would someone get a bad fluid sample and change the dff based on only that? Frankly Id run it till it blew.

Sorry to hear.... If someone opens the diff it would be useful to hear what is causing these to fail.

They won't. To get the reman diff from bmw, you have to send the unit back intact so that they can reman it or bmw charges you an extra $400

So, you will never know what caused the failure?

I asked my mechanic to call me when he has it off the car and on the pallet so that I can take some pictures of the inside from th axle mounts. I will not be digging my hands in there as there are tons of fragments according to him.

rockauto also has some good prices on parts for our cars.
I got a OEM BOSCH MAF for $189 versus $300+ anywhere else i looked at the time.

I'm not dealing with BMW. My Indy told me about the $400 core charge. Just another $400 that I'm not wiling to spend to satisfy curiosity
