So my X5 is black, but Jyohay, would you say 6-8 coats would be a "rule of thumb" for most any vehicle, no matter the color?

coats vary from person to person as some spray heavier than others.
you really need to go by gallons of product on the car, and i wouldnt be doing an x5 with less than 5 gallons
