I also had a 2002 e53 3.0i, now a 2009 e70 30si. I like the sixes, they are plenty quick for my use (wife and kids). IMHO condition is #1. You don't want something that has been abused and looks it.

AKE53,

Apparently, (according the experts here), you are idiot if you don't pay $250 -$300 for a third party independent pre-purchase inspection. Don't be an idiot. . (even with existing warranty left!!!).

then again... the guys that recommend that are probably third party independent pre-purchase inspectors.

Good luck.

Charles

As long as you have the LCI headlights and USB port for audio. Well, for me, that's all I want.

Whatever you buy, check the Carfax and see if the car was CPO certified before Jan 1st, 2014. The CPO warranty is transferable only if it was certified before the above date. I was lucky to find mine at a dealership (not BMW) that had no idea the car was CPO certified in 2013. First thing i did after I bought the car was to stop by the BMW dealership and put my name on the CPO.

I recently bought a '13 xDrive35d, with the options you are looking for plus HUD, side view cameras, and comfort access. The comfort sets would be my "no compromise" option, followed by comfort access.

Personally, I wanted the Top Hi-Fi audio and rear climate control and tobacco interior. I found a one owner with the hideous Platinum Bronze exterior and that was my only compromise. The basic sound system is junk but the Hi-Fi is better, Top Hi-Fi is just lovely. That was a must for me as well as a trailer hitch. Mine is a pre-lci as I wanted no part in the turbo 6cyl and all the crap that comes with it. I am extremely happy with my choice as I am sure you will be once you find the one that's right for you.

I would not buy an E70 right now. There is an open airbag recall and BMW dealers can't sell them and won't take them as a trade in.

I went by the BMW dealer and the recall is not for the X5 but the X3. I don't know what exactly is going on but that is all I've heard.

As for the X5 alone.
I had mine now for about a 100K miles and I will agree with others.
At ALL COST, you must do a pre purchase inspection.
In the last 3 years of owning the car I have spent about 7K on maintenance, and this does not include the other 4K I still need to spend on the valve seals.
I do have a 4.8 car but you should expect similar maintenance if you are not car full.

Good luck to you, if you get one post some pictures.
