Vibration at idle with foot on brake

I have an intermittent vibration when I stop and am in drive with either my foot on the brake or the auto hold feature active. Take my foot off the brake and the vibration stops - clearly something is vibration but it's hard to locate - does anybody have any ideas or has anybody experienced similar?

Although this may be a unique issue that will garner some helpful suggestions, to receive the most pertinent help, you should post the model, year and accumulated mileage of the vehicle you're having an issue with. At least if it's a gas or diesel engine. I can only assume from your post that your X5 has an automatic transmission.

Sorry - I forgot about that.

It's 2008 3.0d SE. Currently on 105,000 miles (UK)

Is there any way of telling if it's a motor mount? I haven't got any fault codes.

It was suggested it could be the vacuum servo but not 100% sure.

I was shooting from the hip, I had 2 bad motor mounts on my E60 and had a horrid vibration at idle that smoothed out upon acceleration or when the idle kicked up with the AC on. Replaced the two rear engine mounts. The E70 has the almost/if not the same Identical engine as my E60. Just a thought.

I get a little rumbling at Idle also. 3.0i, seems like it's coming from the passenger side. Are there any DYI's on replacing the mounts anyone knows about?

Would a bad engine mount be intermittent or would it constantly be faulty?

In the diesel the engine mounts are vacuum controlled.

I believe the gassers don't and use rubber mounts filled with hydraulic fluid. If that's the case they are easy to spot as they are covered with fluid that looks (and taste, if you'd ask) like coolant.

Now back to the diesel mounts. It may have to do with the vacuum system since when you step on the break you activate the vacuum assist system.

Take a look starting at page 100 of this document -> https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1e...ew?usp=sharing

Your vacuum system *may* be somewhat different but it should give you a general sense.

Another member of this forum by the screen name of ninja_zx10 was looking at engine mounts as a possible source of vibration, but I'm not sure if he ever solved it.

It could also be total unrelated, but since the topic of mounts came up, I thought I'd share what I know about them.

As always, we appreciate if you report back any finding for future reference...

To bring this up to date.

I bought replacement engine mounts from Leebmann 24 and had my local dealership fit them.

Car is much smoother on start up and shut down. Seems to run much smoother and quieter - pick up is better too.

There is a very, very faint, brief vibration with the foot on the brake but lasts literally second or less and only noticeable with the radio off and probably because I'm looking out for it.

Fingers crossed - this has cured my vibration problem and will help others with similar issues.
