"Blips" in the RPM's at idle - 2007 3.0si

Hey all,

I bought a 2007 X5 3.0si a couple months back. Along with a couple other issues, I'm getting occasional "blips" or dips in the RPMs. They only seem to show up when in gear and at idle (ie when stopped at red lights). The blips aren't triggering any CELs and I'd say are nuisance more than anything else. I recently replaced both Vanos solenoids with genuine OEM BMW hoping that might help. Although my fuel economy has improved significantly since, the blips still persist.

Any ideas where to look next?

Thanks in advance,

Cedric

I had the same thing with my 2008 3.0. Random blip, like a hiccup. It then on occasion threw a CEL. By coincidence, my car f-ed up one day with the AC on and was running pretty rough. I had one bad coil pack and replaced them all along with both vanos and all the filters and plugs. I also replaced all of the intake manifold gaskets because it was an easy job and I was already in there. It was perfect for about 20K and then randomly had an exhaust vanos code, loss of power and just ran a quick reset because I didnt feel like dealing with it in the snow and cold. Before I had the opportunity to dive into it, the car was totaled in a head on in December 2016.

Thanks for the input bmrboi2.

Just ordered new plugs and an air filter. Judging by the lack of upkeep by the previous owner, I'm sure both are long overdue and need doing anyways. We'll see if it makes any difference.

I do find it interesting that these blip only show up when the truck is in gear. Non existent when idling in park.
