Sunroof Shade

So for the past month, I have noticed something odd. My X5 has had a creeping sunshade. Every time I get into it, it has crept forward maybe 2-3 inches. It doesn't creep forward past the first stop. Its nothing serious, I was just wondering if I maybe had a bad switch or if its a random gremlin in its old age. Whats most annoying is that every time my husband gets in he just bitches about it and asks "Why is it doing that?" or "Why haven't you fixed that yet?"

Hi,

Mine does this too, and it's really annoying, but once I figured out what was happening, I guess it makes sense.

Do you have CA on your X5, have you coded it at all?
If so, I've found that every time I lock the doors with CA via the door handles (also coded to fold the mirrors & close the windows & sunroof if open) the shade moves forward a couple of inches. It seems if the sunroof glass is closed the "close the sunroof function" includes the shade it it moves for as long as you have your hand on the door handle in an attempt to completely "close the sunroof"... If you keep your hand on the handle long enough it will close completely.

If you don't have CA, or haven't done any coding, I don't know if the same behavior is standard with the key.

Try holding the lock key down and see if the shade moves while you are holding the button.

Hope this helps,
John

Post #2, interesting. Not sure but this may help...
When I open the CA door I place my hand all the way on the handle, ready to pull it after it unlocks & beeps.
But when I lock the door I just touch my fingertip or thumb on the little raised ridges on the top of the handle towards the rear, briefly, and listen for the beep. This lock method may prevent it from activating the 'close sunroof' function. I have never noticed my sunshade move at all.
Let us know.

With CA, the sunshade doesn't close unless you really keep your hand there for a few extra seconds. You may even have to remove and re-place your hand in order to get it to close the sunroof/shade. I've coded other stuff but not as mentioned above so mine acts as I've described.

And our '08s aren't old, at least not to me.

Thanks 95wildtt, Mine is coded to close via the fob and C/A. It never occurred to me that was it. I will monitor it the next time I am in it....well outside of it.

For further clarification, I by no means consider my X5 old. Bad phrasing. Shes the oldest in the fleet and has near 160,000 miles on it. We call her the old goat but still treat it like it was new.

When I'm driving it and see other SUV's out there knowing they are newer and have more refined tech than I do, I still smirk with arrogance knowing that I am far superior. I may not be able to beat them off the line but I'll tear shit up in the curves while they have to stomp on the brakes.
