brain dead X5 4.8: anyone had engine crank but no start?

shop says it is getting fuel pressure.

they are pointing to electronics. ECU, imobilizer, etc.

Read the codes and post here. This engine control module (ME9.2 specifically) has a tendency to loose sync with the immobilizer and refuse to fire up. "EWS tampering....." code will be stored in the DME memory.

I don't have the equipment to read codes.

shop finally figured it is a module that is between the immobilizer and engine CPU.

it confirms your key then send OK to ECU to run engine.

they want $800 to put in a new one. does this sound right to you?

we are done with this vehicle. trade in or sell.

No.

But it seems you have no choice, right? I mean you could have asked the shop for the codes, but just figured "lets see what they say" and at the same time asked here...

I **believe** there is a way to recode these and not replace the modules. But unless YOUR shop knows how to do this, what is the point? Your only option is to do what they say, I guess.

You want to ask them for the specific part number? Search for that part, see what they sell for.... or just pay whatever they ask.

This last link, like post #6, provides some details on resetting....

of course, you give this info to a shop and they will (a) snort at people using the internet, (b) declare they are experts, not people on the forums, (c) not actually have INPA to do programming, instead all they have is BMW diagnostic SW, and they cannot reset this- and (d) insist a new module is the only solution.

But again, without a code, how can we possible know if the shop is right??

There is no module between the DME (engine control module) and CAS(the immobilizer). They communicate directly, and over 2 lines, for redundancy. Your shop is absolutely out on a guessing/shopping spree. Do not do anything without reading the DME codes, even with a generic OBD scanner. I can help over the phone too, send me PM if you need my assistance.

it is nice to know we have great resources on this forum. I wish I found out sooner. they ordered a new CAS which required the owner's(my wife) ID as the dealer required it.

Thanks, Kirk. I will reach out if this doesn't get resolved
