Regular X5 x35i owner, but I just recently bought a 2011 335d with 60k miles on it (still CPO for another couple of months.) The CBU cleanup was done under CPO at about 54k miles.

I am definitely enjoying the monster torque that the engine puts out. Decided on buying a diesel after having a 535d as a loaner for a week, and really missed the 2007 E90 that my wife had for a few years, so it only made sense to go with 2011 335d to get it all!

Anyway, I am interested in learning about any issues that diesel engine might have, especially since this is my first diesel car and I really don't know much about them. Will keep an interested eye on this thread and any other diesel related threads.

Just as analogy, many of the problems with the N63 engine are considered to happen because the engine was never broken-in properly. It has so much usable power down low that hardly any regular owner will get to the high load cells of the map for more than a few seconds. Thus, the piston rings may never seat properly, and generally, engine that runs mostly on low and mid-load deteroriates quicker than one that is loaded properly. This is true especially for the diesel, considering that the EGR is closed at the higher load conditions. M57 is way overpowered for the 3 series, and i dont think that the engine can be loaded properly at all. Even on my X5 i dont feel the engine is loaded good in a daily use, even more so the [stupid] transmission likes to downshift for no apparent reason. IMHO the only time the engine is really loaded for a substantial amount of time is when towing, going uphill.

haha, I floor my D all the time (pretty much every-time I drive it)! Depends on your driving conditions and style I suppose (mine is tuned). Some would say the average 3 driver is going to drive more aggressively than an X5 driver, because of the more sporting nature of the car and personality of a 3 driver. I dunno, I've drive my D with the cruise on at a constant 100-125mph for hundreds of miles at a stretch on cross country drives through west Texas, new mexico, Wyoming, okay western states. (its easy to cruise at 100mph on i-10 in west Texas, the speed limit is 80mph). I suppose its really not running a car hard that was designed to cruise at 155. But it does pull 2650rpms at 100.

Agreed the N63 has its problems. I would also agree most SUV drivers don'r run their engines hard (though I have and do floor my X5 M too). It matches my observation that the left lane on interstates is frequently clogged with SUV's who won't pass someone for miles (they won't give it some gas). No offense but its become the lane where people can hang out and drive on what I call brain dead (texting, reading, not caring). I won't speculate if running the N63 hard is the cause of its ring seating problems... Subaru's have problems with rings not getting bedded properly as well and do have other manufactures (problem on mid 2000 camrys). So its not a uniquely BMW thing. Also the engines for the most part are broken in at the factory and not left to the consumer to do (too much warranty cost risk). Which makes me lean towards a bad design.

Congratulations on the D. It was my Unicorn and I still love driving it every day. What color, packages did you get?

Well the best place to read up on the d is on e-90post. They have a diesel forum N57 / M57 Turbo Diesel Discussions - 335d - E90Post - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

There really isn't a lot of diesel discussions here. the e90post forums are full of very knowledgeable individuals on the diesel, its where I did all of my research before buying mine 2 years ago.

I do drive my X5 100-110mph (when I find someone else in a bigger hurry to hide in his shadow ) and the MPG shows between 15 and 20 mpg, which is low to medium load. The 335D will be even more unloaded because of the better aerodynamic. Towing 5000lbs, plus the X's 5000lbs, uphill is what I call this engine really doing work. Hustling it through the city is even worse because the [stupid] transmission will keep it at high RPM and it will load the engine (full boost) somewhere after 60-70mph.

Thanks. It has everything (nav, oyster dakota leather, heated seats/steering, 17" wheels, comfort access, shades back window/seat), fold down rear seat.... everything I could ask for except sport. With two kids in the car, I really didn't want to have the sport (although I love it.)

The color is platinum bronze (growing on me).
