There is nothing special about the removal of these struts other than the 2 connections and the strut holder removal. I'd rate it a 4/10. On par with thrust arm/lower control arm removal.

My strut doesn't come back out slowly when I press the shaft in. I'd say they have already gone bad if these weren't electronically controlled, so I wouldn't know. I'll see if replacing other rubber components will give me a livable ride. But I agree that coilovers is what's next if this doesn't work out. KW V3's are probably the only option. Can you post the link to the EDC module? The one on ecstuning doesn't seem to work on our cars.

I'll be posting a DIY once I'm done with this job.

e70 2008 3.0i suspension

I also live in Houston. I gave my son my e53, and upgraded to the 2008 with 105k miles. I have had an increasingly worsening clunking coming from the front passenger side suspension. Living inside the loop, we do have relatively crappy streets thanks to all of the irresponsible infrastructure contractors the city doesn't makes sure restore the street properly after excavation and repairs are complete. One of the worst is the goofy roundabout at Washington Avenue and Westcott, which is paved with bricks that were never put back properly once removed by contractors for invasive repairs. I've just had this e70 for about 6 months, so I haven't really looked into this much until I found this thread of rather useful information. I just did a bunch of suspension work on the e53 before I gave it to my son, I wasn't really expecting to have to do a bunch more on this one this soon. Since it has the 3rd row seating, I have 18" Michelin run-flats.

brown residue

I went and inspected the to of the strut towers and sure enough, there was plenty of brown residue from the bump stop degradation. Pics attached.

I purchased my 2008 4.8l with Active Suspension with 66k mile on it.

While the suspension was in pretty good shape when I purchased the X, I could tell it was not so happy. I have 88k on it now and I have had full suspension parts for almost a year that I have not had a chance to install. I injured my hand pretty bad and will hopefully be able to get around to doing the work here in the next month or so.

I would say the suspension on these is only good for about 75k miles max unless you have some really nice roads and rarely hit any bumps.

This is the price you pay for ride quality on a lot of rubber bushings.
