Power Steering Fluid -

Have been searching for recommended Power Steering Fluids to do a full flush.

My X5 indicates ATF fluid only; I know that certain models call for CHF11S, which is a very specific and well defined replacement fluid, but what about for the ATF? is any brand/type ok? or is there a preferred/recommended one, an OEM one?

I found some posts that call for Pentosin ATF1...any thoughts/opinions?

In my opinion, if just generic ATF is called for, any full synthetic Dexron III or IV would be an acceptable choice. I prefer Redline products, but any mainline brand will be acceptable (Castrol, Amzoil, Mobil 1, etc). In the power steering system you are looking for rubber preservation, low foam, heat stable hydraulic fluid. Once you get into the active suspension and other uses for the high pressure fluid other requirements come into play.

Thx for the response; guess will go for a good ATF one, fresh fluid is probably better to the sludge I have there.......

I flushed my M5 steering system and used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. I think it's a Dexron III/Mercon/Mercon V fluid. Works great.
