Strange 35d Injector Failure??

My E70 35D with 140k miles on the counter started making a strange noise (knoking) at idle. I tried locating the noise and believe it came from somewhere at the back of the engine from upper-middle side. Cars drove fine, like before, but would vibrate a bit at idle while RPMs were stable. When touching the high pressure fuel lines connecting to the injectors, I realized #5 was vibrating much more than the other ones. The knocking appeared to be in synch with injector#5 vibration. I connected Rheingold and ran a test. CODE 459B Smooth Running Controller - Cylinder 5.
Injector#5 has correct resistance (approx. 180 ohms), harness from DDE to Injector was found in good condition. I decided to remove injector#5.

Injector core seems to be separated from injector outer part. Maybe picture below can explain this better.

Is it normal to have the outer injector part loose? And do you think this could cause the engine knocking noise? Is there anything I can do or need to buy a new injector?

I had this code popup a few days ago (459B-#5). I had removed the foam insulation that sits on top of the intake manifold and replaced broken engine partitions a year or so ago. Corrosion to the area was not bad at the time. I have not had a chance to check the injector recently but it has been raining here the last couple days. The code is only triggered if the condition exists for < 15 secs so definitely not a fluke. Cleared the code and hasn't come back yet but I have had a slightly increased vibration @ idle as well so would be interested to see what you find. Will try to check if I have the same symptoms of #5 vibrating more than the others.

No sure if just tightening up the outer sleeve will "fix" your problem given that these injectors are meant to disassemble for servicing:

I'd say tighten it first then if it does not fix it you might want to purchase a new injector.

I ended up replacing that injector with new one. I still got a code 004B16 after installing new injector: "Zero Quantity Adaptation, Injector, Cylinder 5. However, that only occurred one time, shortly after repair. 2000miles on the counter since then and no errors, no vibration, no knocking.

Where did you end up buying from? There are a few sellers on ebay such as sprintsupplier and ddmtechnik offering "new" at significatly reduced costs. I may take the risk and try going with ddmtechnik from the UK - should be no import duties since it's injectors and >$800. Although I've heard people having good luck with sprintsupplier also. Thanks for the update.

For some reason I could not trust E-Bay sellers for such high precision components. One thing I noted while considering Ebay was warranty period, which was close to non-existent. I ended up buying it from AutoHaus AZ. No complaints, these injectors come with 2 year warranty.

Did the new one's outer piece move around like the issue you thought you had? I forgot if my new injectors moved... I think it was able to rotate?

You are right robnitro, outer peice was able to rotate on the new one, but the amount of play I had on the failed one was huge!
