Engine problems!!!

I took my 2012 X5 to my local dealership for some A/C service, a tpms warning light service and recall work on the front axles. Upon making these repairs they also said I had an oil leak from the oil filter gasket housing which they also repaired. They test drive it and in doing so said the vehicles was running poorly and now it won't turn over at all and I need a new engine all together!! : Has anyone else experienced catastrophic engine failure like this just out of the blue?

No.

And of course a catastrophic failure- when the car was running fine, AFTER the dealer did repairs, is always a concern.

DO YOU HAVE A WARRANTY?

If they are asking you to pay, you will want FAR more information...if it is warranted...eh, not so much- unless you are curious.

I need some clarity here! The BMW dealership indicated that after completing the work you now need a new engine???

Unfortunately no warranty. They did all repairs, test drove the vehicle to ensure everything was okay and during the test drive said vehicle started running poorly, pulled over and had it towed back to dealership where they discovered shavings in oil filter. Now I'm in need of new engine.

Someone is covering up here, IMO

I would immediately get it to a different shop to determine if their prior work caused this failure. Unless they are paying for this failure....

Did you authorize the repair to the oil filter housing gasket?

It sounds like that is the only component they worked on that could have been botched badly enough to trash the engine that quickly.

Did they forget to top the oil back up after the repair?

I see a call to BMWNA Customer Relations in your future. Do not sign anything at the dealership. In fact, if this were mine, I wouldn't even pick it up.

If it was fine before they "fixed" it, and it now needs a new engine, and it never left their possession; it's their problem.

I am absolutely baffled by this. This has to be the third or fourth BMW Dealer story I have read on forums pointing to dealer incompetence resulting in massive damage.

Thank god for capable and knowledgeable indies.

Joey- Any updates???

They may have messed something up...and now, the guilty mechanic gets to make up a story to cover his error to his bosses. Be very careful, you can wind up screwed for $20k plus.....
