2017 TMPS Compatible?

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new member to the forum and just purchased a 2012 X5 drive 35d. It came with the OEM 20" wheels, but I replaced them with the newer OEM 20" wheels with brand new tires that came off a 2017 X5.

I'm getting a TPM malfunction warning light. I took the car to the tire shop and they said that all of the sensors are working, but they're a different type.

Do the TPMS from a 2017 work on the 2012?

I think that I'll have to replace them with the older version, but I wanted to see if any of you have experience. Thanks in advance!

Yes...the f15 X5 uses different sensors vs the e70/e71...its indicated on this BMW wheel size chart below. Although the wheel specs are compatible...the sensors are different.

Since you're new...you may not be aware of the online part database sites (see 3 of my favs below). These sites allow you to look up BMW parts diagrams and part nbrs...they also have a part nbr search feature that reveals compatibility...you can find out if a part is model specific or what other BMW models also use the part nbr.

You can look up the TPMS sensor's part nbr at any of the sites below...then check which BMW models use them (you'll find them in the WHEEL diagrams):

  1. BMW Parts Catalog
  2. RealOEM.com - Select Your BMW Model
  3. https://www.etkbmw.com/ (this site also has a VIN decode feature)
