Who has replaced the electric water pump and t-stat?

My 2012 3.5i is right at 60k miles. As a preventative maintenance, I want to replace the water pump and thermostat. I also bought a new hose that goes between the two.

I am having difficulty finding detailed information as to how this is done. Specifically, do I need to remove anything else to get these parts out to swap out? I saw some posts talking about pulling off the intercooler to make room to fish these out, whereas other posts never mention it.

So: Who's done this job on the N55, and what did you remove to get the old parts out?

Thanks in advance

Bavauto has a nice video but on the smaller 3 series car I believe. Using the TIS information msan provided above, I'm sure it can be done. I personally took the car to a shop to do it since I don't have much time anymore. I think there's also some instructions on this board or others from X5s who did the change. Took about 7 hours to change if I recall correctly.

They usually go out between 120-150k miles why are you changing it so early? I'll give you $50 for yours as a backup for one of my cars.

The N55s use electronic water pumps which can fail as early as 50k miles. It's failure is pretty much based on engine run time than mileage. I've had mine fail at 55k miles because I'm mostly in city traffic and miles. Others who have had the water pump fail at 80k miles or higher typically have highway miles.

I truly wish that this were case. Looking through several forums will prove that this is not always true.

This is more accurate. I just bought the X5 with 58k miles on the odo, and the fact that this vehicle spent its entire life in SoCal, I'm certain that those miles were spent sitting in traffic. The bottom line is, I can't trust this vehicle until that water pump has been replaced. I wanted to take the X5 to Vegas last weekend, but with the WP not replaced, I had to drive my wife's Lexus Hybrid....nice car, but man, is it boring.
