The car has been sent to the dealer and they are saying that it needs a new def tank active. and a new control module. Does anyone think this makes sense to replace both? And any suggestions on how to find these pets cheaper after market vs paying them $2500 to replace these ? Not sure if it will work either.

Why ask for advice?

Will you follow any of it?

at the end of the day we could tell you there are DIY fixes, VW parts that might work, other ways to do it.

This isnt rocket science- if someone wanted to take $2500 from me Id want to know stuff...

Like what are the two part numbers they want to replace? What are they charging for each? How much labor for each? What did they do, specifically, to diagnose this failure? How did they determine the controller is bad independently of the DEF tank?

You look up those two part numbers in google... we tell you if you are getting screwed. You push back, dont roll over.

But WAY too much work for non-car people. Too much for people that are intimated by mechanics, even when they are not being treated fairly.

I just sold my working SCR tank.

The tank and any parts associated with it quickly add up to that much in Parts.

That’s why i spent half that on removing all of it.

If you are under 120k miles, there’s an extended warranty on the SCR system.

Advice: Taken

I have asked for advice here because there seems to be more knowledge collectively than the dealer or average mechanic has on this specific vehicle due to the DIesel component.

Funny you should mention the request for part #s and details. I did request that yesterday for this very reason and this was what I got back.

“The active tank and control module are $2556.17 installed. Labor for diagnosis will be 2hrs.”

Agreed. I need specifics and logic as to how they concluded this.

And all I wanted to do was fix it to sell it. I have always maintained this car any minute something failed (control arms, etc). And this issue has made us go out and buy a back up car.

There is a “power switch” which looks like a control module #16197278554
And there is the “processing unit” 16197220677

I have The power switch for sale on eBay complete with the wiring harness for $99.99. I can send you the link if you are interested.

The processing unit was still attached to the tank when I sold it. But You can find what you need on eBay for around $600

Real OEM.com is where you look up part numbers.
