Did my plugs, noticed a couple things

Hey all,

Yesterday I did the plugs on my fairly recently purchased 2007 3.0. All went pretty nice and smoothly. Looking at the plugs, I think this was well overdue. I did discover a couple things though I wanted to ask about...

First off, the #3 cylinder plug had oil on the threads. The electrode was dry and the coil tube seemed clean. Not sure where the oil is coming from. Ideas? Anything to be concerned about?

Second, back beside the #4 & #5 cylinders the flat round thing (not sure what it is) looks like i has a nipple for a vacuum line. I don't see a vacuum line anywhere there though. Is this normal?

Thanks in advance!

Cedric

What is the engine type?

Inspect for :

VCG leak. Very common.
Valvetronic sensor seal or gasket. Another common source of leak.

That oil might be coming from outside. Use degreaser, clean the engine bay, dry it. Drive it for few days. Inspect it again.

Inspect oil filter housing too. Another famous leak.

Engine's a N52.

Thank you for all the tips! Definitely gives me a goo few places to start looking. Oil seems to be getting past the gasket at the base of the oil fill hole on the valve cover. I don't think that's the source of the wet plug though but it'll need attention.

... And the round thing with the possible missing vacuum line? Any ideas?

Most likely a leaky valve cover gasket. If there is oil in the spark plug well, it will get on the plug threads when the plug is removed. There is no vacuum hose on that hose barb. However there is supposed to be a sliding plastic cap. The cap allows air to exit the barb and will close if the CVV diaphragm fails and air attempts to enter the port. I lost my cap when changing plugs and found it again when changing the VCG. Look closely you might find it in one of the nooks & crannies in the valve cover .

My e70 4.8i spark plug change

Hope this picture turns out,

I also replaced my plugs this weekend, I noticed what looked like a vacuum hose coming up from the bottom of the engine on the right side, ending near the front most spark plug. The pic shows where the hose goes up under the valve cover...cover? My camera is facing the block with the radiator overflow reservoir at its back. Where does this hose go?

The gentleman who said that there was a nipple on that round flat thing on the right valve cover...I wonder if this goes there?.
