Oversized wheel options

Hey guys, I just picked up my new to me x5 today and I've been looking at different summer wheel options and need some advice from guys with different set ups than stock.

My x5 has the sport package and 20" wheel option. I like the 214 style wheel but they're not my favorite and I hate run flats. The truck I picked up had some curb rash on all 4 rims and 2 tires had nails in them. The dealer refinished the rims and replaced 2 of the tires. The set is essentially like new, and I will likely sell them in the spring.

I'm thinking about running a 21 or 22" wheel in a squared configuration with wheel spacers and would like to hear from guys running this set up.
How much more tread life can I expect with a squared set up vrs. staggered?

I like the simplicity of the Rohana RC22 rim however unfortunately it's not available in graphite in a 22" size.

I'm open for suggestions on a 5 star style rim. I'm looking for as light or lighter than stock rim, 20-22" size, something easy to clean and preferably graphite or perhaps gunmetal color which I think would go nicely on an Alpine white vehicle.

Depends on the tires, THE ALIGNMENT NUMBERS, and how and where you drive,

But Id say rotating can get you 25% more.

I run 20x11 with 295s square (style 214). Almost at 20k miles and at about half 50-60% tread remaining. That’s far better than what you can do with a staggered setup.

In my opinion, I think premium OEM wheels (not 18” or 19” wheels) with spacers to get flush looks best. Aftermarket wheels just don’t do it for me on an SUV. Sports cars are a different story, though. Mine are powder coated matte black. 30mm spacers in the back. 3mm up front. Perfectly flush. If you want something different than the 214, check out the 21” style 215 or 375.

Note that if you have the rear flares on your X5 and want to run square, you’ll will need a 25mm or 30mm spacer to make it even with the front in terms of “flushness”.

I have factory 128 21”s and I think going any bigger is stupid. I like my wheels but have considered downsizing many times. The fact that you’re asking about treadwear suggests you should go smaller.

PO put these shoes on. Huge. I need to get some mud flaps since they stick out a little. They look great but I think they affect handling a little. 265/40/22 all around

I should have written my post a little more clear. What I was really looking for was feedback on tread wear for staggered vs. squared. The wheel size isn't really relevant I don't believe (unless larger tires wear faster then smaller?).

I'm debating on staggered vs. squared for looks as well as tread wear.

Size wise being less important. If I can't find the wheel I want in a 21", I'm fine with a 20" or 22" depending on price for tires, how they fit and look, etc.

Entropy, do you happen to have any pictures of your x5 you could share please?

Also do you run winter tires in the winter, and if yes how do they work with your wheel spacers? Do you leave the spacers on all year?

I only put on winter tires when I know it's going to snow. Where I live (Portland OR), we only get 1 to 3 snow/ice events a season. I leave the spacers on when I put the winter setup on. Here's a picture of my winter setup.

I called my tire guy and he's got 2 used but 90% tread Michelin Latitude Sport 3's in 295/40/20's set aside for me. He thinks he'll have 2 more available for me by the time I'm ready to put a package together in late March or early April.

I'm trying to decide on what wheel I want now. Looking at Rohana RC22 or RC7 or something similar from a different manufacturer.

I'm buying a spare tire kit tomorrow for the x5 in anticipation of getting rid of the run flats for good.

Beside the added advantage of being able to rotate, I'm hoping whatever offsets are available on the aftermarket wheels are similar to the BMW 18" wheels I have for winter, so I can rotate all sets and leave the wheel spacers on all year to improve the look of my winter set up which where I am in Canada is almost 6 months of the year.

Good luck with everything. Glad I could help. The 295/40 is standard on the Porsche Macan and I think a Mercedes GLC? You will love being able to rotate and get more life out of the tires.

Offset is only half the equation for determining flushness. The width is the second half. For example, 18x8 +0 is the same as 18x10 +25. Just make sure that for up front your inner backspacing is no more than 173mm (wheel width divided by 2, in millimeters, plus offset), otherwise you'll rub the knuckle.
