I was thinking the same thing...this is a weird problem.

I would guess that he has a N55....doesn't the diesel and the V8 have mechanical water pumps?

Yes, the M57 diesel has a belt driven mechanical pump.

I do wonder if maybe the system is designed to allow coolant to operate independently of the engine running...in case the engine is very hot, a thermal sensor can allow the pump to run

AND

if there is a bad sensor, or some other issue, the system 'thinks' the engine is super hot all the time?

Just a wag.

Theres a process when replacing coolant to run the waterpump and get the air out if you put car into ignition and hold down gas pedal for like 5 seconds it will start the process. Dont know if its happening in this case when car shutting down.

Hey Rupe, did you finally solved the problem with your X5 water pump?
I'm having the same problem with my 2012 X5 and can't find a solution.
Can you please advise on what you did to solve this?

Thanks for sharing this, Rupe...
That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure before I spend all that $$ in a new water pump and thermostat.
Just to make sure...
- Was your water pump the only problem?
- Did you ever find out what caused the pump to go bad?
My pump still works fine and has good pressure, but it keeps turning on with the
engine off whenever I open any door or so. I just noticed oil on the coolant tank cap
and I suspect the pump over pressurized and blew out the oil cooler seal.
- Did you also have any temp sensor bad or anything else checked?

I really appreciate your help on this!!
