Here is a copy of his howto

Quote:
I have been planning to replace the sluggish Toshiba 4200rpm mechanical drive to SSD on my 2011 X5D and finally completed the project.
The speed improvement is great. The upgrade is well worth
Pros:
- instant boot when you start the vehicle, no more BMW logo hanging on screen for 10 sec
- no more waiting for mechanical drive to spin and find the data
- Navigation is much more responsive, finds addresses quickly, faster zoom-in and zoom out
- noiseless
- shockproof
- low power usage
I decided to create this DIY for anyone who wants do this project and turbo charge the CIC
It's for BMW X5 E70 but it would work for other models as well
What you need
- 128GB ATA-6 / PATA SSD - I got ZHEINO SDD of eBay for $92 shipped
- ATA-6 / PATA to USB adapter
- hard drive clone software - I used Partition Hard Disk Manager 15
- regular phillips screw driver
- flat screw driver
- Torx T9 screw driver
- plastic pry tool /optional/ - I used my fingers

You have to do bit by bit copy. They use their own specific file system and 1:1 mirror clone is the only option to have working drive after that. I wish I could expand the 12.7GB Music Storage partition but I didn't find a way to do it. As you can see there are 43.4GB left unused on the SSD

Use your fingers or plastic pry tool to lift the bottom of the ventilation exhaust and pull it up out of place

Step 1 - remove the two phillips screws
Step 2 - gently pull the plastic frame towards you and slowly pry out both sides to the bottom

Remove the two Torx T9 screws holding the HDD tray

With a flat screw driver carefully pry both sides little by little

Pull out the HDD tray

Remove the four Torx T9 screws holding the HDD in tray

Install SDD in tray and replace the four T9 screws
!!! IMPORTANT !!! - Remove the jumper before you slide the tray in

Slide the tray gently into place, don't force it hard at the end - go very slow
Install everything back in opposite order
- Torx screws
- frame
- phillips screws
- ventilation exhaust

Navigation loaded from SDD, old 4200rpm mechanical HDD retired /keep it as a backup/

Your welcome.

The thing is definitely faster now with the ssd. The nav screens will update faster and it starts playing music much faster now. Still takes awhile to show the list of songs but I have over 1000 songs on it.
