That appears to be the number showing on toothbrush's caliper.

One thing that seems to be abundantly clear is that I can't simply buy the BMW badge without purchasing the entire bezel as an assembly. I just want to peel and stick a badge and be done with it! Where possible I try to avoid buying an entire assembly just to get the part(s) that I need. But I know sometimes it's necessary.

So can some of you BMW experts tell me whether it's possible to get just a stinking badge or am I going to be buying the whole thing no matter what I do?

It's apparent that if you just want to slap on a simple 82mm Roundel (the one that's used on 95% of BMWs over the last few decades)...you'll have to do some alterations.

The e70/e71 has a unique rear Roundel that's to them and them only (item #2 in the parts database). Looking at the pic you posted...you can see there are NO HOLES in the part that remains. The regular Roundels (#1 in the diagram) has two nibs on the back side at the 3:00 & 9:00 positions. For that type of Roundel to fit on your e70 rear base...if nothing else, it looks like those little nibs will need to be grinded down/off and some type of adhesive used to secure the altered Roundel to your base.

That's what I'm seeing from the picture you posted and the part numbers listed for the hood and tailgate Roundels in the database:

Yours:

E70 rear tailgate Roundel:

E70 front/hood Roundel has the TWO nibs that prevent the emblem from being able to mount on the rear...an alteration would be required to mount to the rear tailgate location:

Save yourself the headache and just buy genuine because I bought $15 knock-off replacements and it faded after a year and looked like crap so I ended up spending more than if I had just bought original. Slapping a new logo on not knowing if you're ordering the right size or having to adhere it to the non-flat base is also a PITA. Just do what I did and order the whole part:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EPG0W9E (it was $36 when I bought)

The pic doesn't show the raised platform the rear roundel has but the product itself is exactly what you have on the trunk right now. Remove that roundel with silver base entirely from the trunk and snap/stick this on... grommet & adhesive keeps it on the body. This should be what you receive:

This one also says hatch: https://www.amazon.com/BMW-Emblem-Ro.../dp/B00MP5FDKK but I ordered from the above.

That's pretty much the realization I've come to.
