2010 X5 35D Right wing mirror and engine cover insulation

Two question to the group

1. How do I determine if the passenger side rear view mirror ia auto dimming or not and what are some of the replacement options.

The noise insulating foam under the engine cover turned to dust, couldn't find replacement, short of the whole cover. I was thinking of using fiberglass used in the motorcycle mufflers. Anyone done that or any other suggestions.

Thank you for the help.

The Auto Dimming Mirrors will have a rubberized/plastic trim around the mirror glass itself. If the interior mirror dims automatically then chances are your exterior mirrors are auto dimming.

Are you referring to the black hood insulation/sound barrier or the firewall separator?

Thanks bmrboi2 and Qsilver 7, It is the acoustic cover on the 35D the foam insulation under it just disintegrated.

The foam insulation on my X5 X70 has degraded. Did you find a replacement for the foam? Thanks, George

Ditto bmrboi2 in regards to the side view mirror...the auto dimming side view mirror will have a thick black band around its circumference (see 2nd & 3rd pics below).

The regular non-dimming mirror glass does NOT have the thick black band (see 1st pic below).

{regular mirror glass}

{auto dimming glass - note thick black band around circumference}

Get rid of the foam, it holds moisture and causes issues with injectors getting corroded.

The black foam under the acoustic cover (over the engine) is also degrading. It is attached to the cover on the underside. Should I replace it?

Thanks, George
