Smoking door handle

I walked into my garage to find the rear passenger side door handle smoking. I disconnected the battery before things got worse. Has anyone experienced this before? I took a temperature reading and the door handle was well over 100 degrees and the gasket was melting.
Thanks for any input.

Sound like you'll be shelling out in the region of $300 for a new "Comfort Access" door handle in the very near future. You'll need to disconnect it until you have the new one installed to prevent it from damaging the door.

Well this is a new one. Add 'Smoking Door handle' to the list.
I've heard of bad ones getting hot, but smoking?? I'm glad I have a detached garage, 25' hopefully will be enough to prevent house from going up in flames with the garage.
<shakes head in disbelief>

yeah wow - this is a new one to me, I hadn't considered this as a failure mode for door handles. Glad I park in the street!

It is with the Comfort Access option.

It's a feature. Heated door handles, in addition to seats and steering wheel

I have had 7 replaced under warranty.
Comfort access fault. Short, not letting the car go to sleep. draining battery.
Door handle was warm.
