Sound like you'll be shelling out in the region of $300 for a new "Comfort Access" door handle in the very near future. You'll need to disconnect it until you have the new one installed to prevent it from damaging the door.

Well this is a new one. Add 'Smoking Door handle' to the list.
I've heard of bad ones getting hot, but smoking?? I'm glad I have a detached garage, 25' hopefully will be enough to prevent house from going up in flames with the garage. <shakes head in disbelief>

yeah wow - this is a new one to me, I hadn't considered this as a failure mode for door handles. Glad I park in the street!
