Cool E70 LCI non-sport to sport steering wheel swap with paddles

Did a sport steering wheel with paddle swap today.

Happy to say the paddles worked perfectly with no coding or wiring required!

Got the wheel for $150 off ebay, and the sport airbag cover for $30. Lots of guides on swapping the airbag guts to the sport airbag cover so I'll skip that and go right to pictures.

Before:

Airbag gut swap:

After:

I gotta say the sport wheel is much nicer. It's a smaller diameter for sharper turning radius, and much fatter for that sporty feeling.

Paddles are pretty cool, but I doubt I'll use them much. Just wanted them so I could downshift at will when towing my boat.

One thing I noticed - before I'd have to lower the wheel entirely to get it to feel right when driving. This one I had to raise by ~30%, so there's that bonus.

Looks great! This is one of the items on my to-do list. Been watching for a reasonably priced and in decent condition heated version for a little while. Paddles not necessary in my case, but I can't lose the heat function, else I have to drive with gloves in the winter.

How long did it take?

The entire swap took roughly 30 minutes. Hardest part was figuring out what to use for the airbag clips. Ended up using plastic knives.

Thats pretty cool.

How much for your old switches? They look to be in much better shape than mine.

I'll probably keep the old wheel and cover so I can part out when I sell.

E70 LCI non-sport to sport steering wheel swap with paddles

Is there anyone who has done this with a heated steering wheel and somehow retained the heated wheel functionality?

That video is heated to heated sport. What is being asked is heated to heated sport WITH/PLUS paddles. I haven't seen that yet myself but would be interested in it too.

I'm not sure about the E70, but in my E53 I wanted to do this but it was not possible. If you have the heated wheel all the wires in the clock spring are occupied...

Did they ever make a sport, heated wheel with paddle shift? If it was able to be optioned together you can probably do it by replacing the clock spring along with the wheel. Otherwise... it will be the same situation I'm in with my E53.

That's what I'm thinking too. In the E38 you they never made a heated sport wheel so a lot of people purchased AMG paddles and retro-fitted them using the heated steering wheel wiring to the steptronic.

But since I have a heated sport wheel on my E70, I'd rather not give that up for paddles.
