2007 E70 adaptive drive suspension noise

Hi there,

I've been battling some suspension issues for sometime including some clunks and the rattle in this video. The clunks on hard braking are gone but I can't figure out where this rattle is coming from.

I've replaced both sides:
1. lower thrust arm.
2. middle thrust arm.
3. sway bar end links.
4. rebuilt shocks on both sides with all of the rubber pieces replaced and new upper strut mount.
5. the sway bar was replaced about 2 years ago.

I've also removed the steering ball joints at the wheel and have felt for play everywhere but cannot find any.

Finally today i removed the sway bar end links and drive down the road to a pot hole at the end of the street and the noise is still there so the noise doesn't appear to be related to the sway bar.

thanks for the help!

No ideas, you've eliminated the top 4 or 5....

I just HATE chasing suspension noises.

GL! (bump)

You can use something like this to assist. The mic can be clamped onto things while you drive around. And there is a bigger version with more mics and a switch. These are junk and mine broke after the first use. Return was easy though.

Unfortunately I've been able to tackle this noise yet and I've purchased the chasis ears which haven't told me much other than there's a noise in the suspension...

I've now added:
1. upper wishbone
2. both struts
3. both drive shafts

to the replacments list and the noise persists. I took a video this morning. Is my thrust arm shot and causing the noise?

Wait...in post #1 you said you already replaced the thrust arm.

It is **THE** post common failure point on this suspension

Sounds like the same issue I had recently... I've replaced those same parts you did.. and it ended up being the control arm again. My guess was that the installer didn't properly torque while on the ground. They most likely just used the gun to tighten all of them up while on the lift... Do you also hear this noise when you're tapping the brakes?

Here's my video... https://youtu.be/lv4lylCPbXQ

Agree about improper install. Can ruin them in a few k.

Yes, i get a clunk when i jab the breaks. The noise doesn't sound quite the same as going over bumps and i sort of convinced myself it was the calipers but I couldn't require if that noise was normal or not. I also have a rubber squishing noise as I came to a stop, right at the very end of the stopping motion.

I'll give a new set a shot. I'm the installer and I did tighten them while the weight was on the wheels. This started about 6-7 months ago when reversing in front of my house i could hear a clunk (front left), then one day on the freeway traffic went from 80 to stopped quickly and I did a hard break and heard a loud clunk. I replaced a bunch of stuff as mentioned in my first post and then went and tested it with hard breaking and heard a second loud clunk (front right). Those hard breaking loud clunks must have been the left/right thrust arms breaking.

What brand replacement tension struts did you use? Whole arm or just new bushes?

Question: At 55-60 mph, what does it do if you lightly apply brakes? Is there an speed where this causes a bit of juddering or vibration??
