Blower Unit re-fitting
I managed to remove the fan fine using the following instructions: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...ntrols/QH51zKr However, I've really struggled to get the fan back in place, it really doesn't want to line up in the grooves correctly and when lining up on plastic guides the screw holes don't line up. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as to line it up correctly as I'm at a loss. |

Keep trying. It took me several hours. I learned nothing that made me say "aha!". It just went into place eventually. I planned to oil mine but after looking at the type and construction of the motor, decided that replacement was the way to go. Definitely not a task I wanted to do again.

Huh- I didn't have any issues at all. It was annoying and I had to force it a bit, but in general I got it in pretty easily. I did it with my hip on the door sill, laying down looking up. My back hurt the next day..

Thanks for the replies... I've tried and tried again today and am unable to get the top screw in closest to the glovebox.. Consequently when I put the fan on max it vibrates the entire car! I think I'm going to have to admit defeat and take to the garage.. why did I start this!

When in doubt: dremel. I've very often found a replacement part to have an extra bump or tab or missing a hole. Compare old v new or watch YouTube video see if you missed something. Sometimes a wire will get pinched and make nothing fit

Managed to get it sorted.... ended up removing the glove box & was able to move the fan into the correct position. See picture of how far out of alignment I was.. I don't think it would have mattered how many times I'd tried to aligned it from underneath it was never going to go in.
It's bitter sweet anyway as now when I run the fan at full speed it vibrates badly, think I've damaged one of the blades on the fan... time to find a replacement..

I've fixed a handful of blowers that vibrated badly, typically from a bent or broken fin. Cut off some from the opposite side to balance the fan for example.

I ended purchasing a replacement fan. I couldn't trust a used one so decided to go new. If it helps anyone else the part direct from BMW is part number 64119246836 (for RHD) at a cost of £226.37. They don't hold in stock but they had it in less than 24 hours.
I've fitted it and my issue is now resolved. Not a job I'll rush to repeat... |
