Transfer Case Issue (?)

Hi -

Seems I have a Transfer Case issue - was checking the front suspension and found that, with both front wheels in the air, if I move the wheels rapidly back and forth (e.g. 20 degrees back & then forward) there is a very loud metallic clunk coming from -I assume is- the transfer case almost like it had no "grease" or if there was a huge play (loosen) connection somewhere.....

Any suggestion? I guess I need to start shopping around for a new one (not sure if just changing the fluid will resolve this.....) the CV joints seem ok (boots are fine and there are no signs of deterioration there)......plus the sound comes from within the center of the car vs the joints......

Thx

Transfer case, CV joint, differential or driveline? All of these components have play in their assemblies. Any of these can make noise. Rotating a wheel rapidly back and forth is not a normal function. I'd expect and have experienced some noise rotating a wheel into position.

When the car is off the transfer case is not engaged, so you can't use this as a diagnosis. The only thing to check is that you had the front driveshaft recall. Other than that, a clunk could be just from the open transfer case clutch grabbing a little as I have experienced when a wheel was in the air. I thought out should have been engaged but the x drive system only engages when energized.
