Fixing transmission faults - 2007 4.8i

Hi guys, my first post here. About to tackle the classic zf 6hp26 issues(leaking, slipping, etc). I've got all the parts, etc, and just in case this doesn't do the trick, I bought another transmission, so one way or another, this is getting done!

One question: For the adaptation, have any of you used Carly?

I know this repair has been documented before, but I'll also post photos and videos as I go along.

That and there is a software update for those transmissions also. Not sure how much Carly shows but you will get the info for all the clutches using INPA or ISTA/D .
Also don't just go resetting all the time. Those numbers are important.
Most of the important parts to change are:
Mechatronix sleeve
Filter with gasket (o ring should come on filter inlet) & bolts ( i reused mine)
The block with the 2 ports (i forget the name. lol)
Lifegaurd 6 fluid (7 bottles if you take down the mechatronics)

I personally didn't change the 4 round sleeves, as they were still nice and soft. My BMW master mechanic friend, told me they almost never change those, but to each his own.

Good luck!

I'm replacing the mechatronic sleeve, bridge gasket(the square thing), all 4 sleeves, and obviously new pan.

Regarding the data for the clutches, I don't see Carly going that deep. On the software front, let's say I want to go all in on INPA or ISTA-D, any recommendation for those sources?

My software on the trans was updated in May of 2018 when I had the tow package installed - not sure if there has been a release since then?

Hopefully they did the update to the trani. i'm sure its done.
There are tonnes of videos, for downloading and installing both INPA and ISTA/D.

Just google it. you will need at least 200 gigs of space or maybe more, it has all the vehicles, wiring diagrams, diagnostics, etc.

i use ISTA/D plus the D+KAN cable you can get from everywhere to connect to Exx bodies, and Ethernet cable i built for Fxx bodies. Coding and programming i use the official ICOM unit . if you are not sure what you are doing it maybe easier to find an indy shop who can do it. its not hard but it helps to have someone teach you, or watch lots of youtube vids.

Carly can do it. Most decent BMW scanners can. My Autophix es910 does it and was $90. I’m interested to hear why and what you are replacing.

Hmmm. Seems high. 1.5 maybe 2 as I recall....

But for sure a steep learning curve, if OP can do it with carly or other BMW specific reader it will be easier.

May 2018, software update was definitely done to the trans...

That said, I've done coding on other non-BMWs, my reason for asking was more to create a clear path for going through this process of transmission adaptation after installing the various parts. I don't have anything major I want to do to the vehicle other than this, so it seems like Carly is a viable solution...

Just pulled the pan, valve body, bridge seal, and mechatronic sleeve... The bridge seal was quite flattened, the mechatronic sleeve was certainly not sealing, and the valve body seals seems overly "squishy" so pulling and replacing those too...

Regardless, there is a slight burnt smell, and there seems to be more shimmery clutch material than I'd care to see... going to button it all back up and see if I can at least get it to move out of the driveway, but I'm thinking it might be good that I have another transmission waiting in the wings.

Pics and video coming soon...

Oh boy. Good luck. The trani fluid is many the nicest smell either so don’t get caught thinking you have a burnt trani based on the smell. Let’s hope for the best. Remember to heat the trani up to about 30 degrees I believe before your last top up.
