DIY: E70 Passenger Door Mirror Motor
This DIY covers replacing the passenger side door mirror motor on a 2009 X5 35d with Comfort/memory seats. More specifically, replacing the Magna mirror motor BMW part number 67-13-6-973-724. This fixed the issue with our passenger door mirror not lowering when in reverse.
Note the Magna mirror motor part number 67-13-6-973-723 does NOT fit E70s with comfort/memory seats. They look similar but the electrical connections are very different part number 67-13-6-973-723 are recessed and part number 67-13-6-973-724 protrude from the body of the motor housing (Photo 1) Parts.jpg Tools: - Thin piece of plastic/wood - T10 with a long shaft - 2 very thin bladed screw drivers - 1 medium screw driver Procedure: Step 1 Remove the mirror glass by prying it off of the mirror motor. The mirror glass is very pricy So I placed a box with a towel under the mirror area just in case. I used a thin piece of wood to gently pop-off the mirror glass working my way around the edges. Most likely the mirror motor mounting plate will remain attached to the mirror glass. See step 6 for how to remove the old mounting plate from the glass. There are several youtube videos online of how to remove the mirror glass if you want more details.Step 2 Unplug the heating harness. I had to use a very small jewelers screwdriver to release the catch (Photo 2) Step 2.jpg Step 3 Remove the mirror motor using the T10 on the 4 screws (Photo 3) Step3.jpg Step 4 Install the new mirror motor Step 5 Test the new mirror motor in-out, up-down, and reverse Step 6 Remove the old mounting plate from the mirror glass. This is a delicate operation. So I did it sitting at a work table with good light. There are several tabs on the mirror glass that need to be pried away to release the mounting plate. Start with a pair of tabs that have a slot midway between them. This slot allows you to pry upward on the mounting plate with a medium screw driver while the two thin screw drivers hold back two of the tabs. The remaining tabs are much easier, as you work around the mounting plate one tab at a time. (Photo 4) Step6.jpg Step 7 Plug the mirror glass into the heating harness Step 8 Gently press the mirror glass onto the mounting plate working your way around the glass. Check to see that it is firmly seated before you let go. Step 9 Double the check the full operation of the mirror motor in-out, up-down, and reverse. Note: there are 2 manufacturers of E70 mirror motors Magna and Eaton. You may want to check your mirror motor before you order any parts. Funf Dreisig |
