E70 fail to start, press start button and nothing, not even a crank, help!
i read the same issued happen on several bmw but i have not seen a fix or root cause of the problem, any feedback? i get no error message on the key, on the screen sometimes i get the yellow message to press the pedal (even when i am pressing), sometimes the 4x4 malfunction message... i all ready took the battery out, took to advance and autozone for testing and both say it was ok but they charge it for one hour anyway, reinstall and nothing, same thing... went to the dealer and worthless with this guys, i rater ask my son.... yes will get better help. i noticed that the break pedal is very stiff, but might be normal as i have might have lost the vacuum as vehicle has no engine power, the steering wheel column dont move, i just hear a click noise when i move the toggle switch to move up/down, front/back and also the steering wheel wont lock... any feedback guys??? help. thanks |

That would help starting the engine, but amp is saying even steering wheel doesn't move with keys in. It should move. Sounds like an electrical issue.. Good luck.

Mechanic just came back with scanner, not an electrical problem per the scan, per his experience is the starter per his feedback he says it is typical on this cars that the starter simply just fail from one start to the next, will take to the shop and lets see what happens, i will keep all posted on the results and experience for others to benefit. thanks

we had a similar problem with out 2008 4.8
we park in the garage so it's always unlocked. one day my wife press the starter switch, nothing. voltage checks out ok. had it towed to the dealer. I heard this from my wife second hand. they told her her key got 'removed' from the computer so they had to reprogram. we never bother trying the second key so we can't prove it's that one key. they also told us to keep it locked/armed when parked so they computer shuts all the electronic components down to save battery. |

Hi amp62314, I have just been reading your thread, what ended up being the issue, I am having exactly the same problem, but none of the forums I am reading actually show the outcome once the issue has been identified,

Hey guys! I have had this problem back in May with my 2011 X5 35i... It's been in the dealership for nearly 2 months now and they haven't provided me with a rental car to use while the car was in service...
Anyways, there is a possibility that the BMW's VANOS bolts might came loose and eventually fall off of the variable timing system... But don't worry about repairing your vehicle for a cost because, this has been recalled in the US and Canada! My dealership called me yesterday afternoon saying that they've got the parts for it after 2 months of waiting and was trying to locate the old bolt (because it went missing inside the engine).. They said that they had found the bolt sliced in half and it was located in the oil pan. So the rest of the bolt was shredded inside the engine which needed and engine cleaning.. They also told me it could've costed me $6000~$7000 doing all that.. But it was free due to the recall! Hopefully that was the cause of the problem and hopefully you guys can quickly fix the problem!!! P.S: Here's the link of an article that regards to the issue I had (posted on Apr.11th/14) BMW broadens engine bolt recall to nearly half-million cars worldwide - Autoblog

^^ Funny story. "engine cleaning"... hahahaha
I was under the impression that if a metal object got shredded you would need a COMPLETE rebuild. You cannot 'clean' all those metal bits out of every oil passage and bearing... Id get BMWNA involved, you should be getting a rebuilt motor. The dealer is definitely 'managing' you... anyone that waits 2 months for parts and no loaner is easy to deflect, yes? |

Hahaha well that's what they told me... To do an engine cleaning.. and I agree, I do think that the engine should be rebuilt.. Wouldn't the bolt(s) damage the camshaft and all that?
The BMW dealership I go to is BMW Moncton which is a small dealership located on the east coast of Canada and I guess they don't provide their customers with a loaner car... Very disappointing had to rent my own car, but it will soon be paid by BMW NA as they just want the invoices/receipts of how much I've spent just for the rental car. By the way, I've contacted BMW NA at least 3 times regarding the VANOS bolt... All they told me to do was that they would contact the dealership to hurry up the process which didn't help at all... Lol Anyways I'm glad to have my X5 received after 2 months of waiting! :P P.S: I will be contacting the dealership tomorrow regarding the shredded metal pieces inside the engine and mention regarding the rebuilding the engine if needed! Thanks for the info ard, I was wondering about that too... |
