Engine oil level fault help please.
So I recently bought an e70 08 X5. I have taken advantage of euro car parts 50% off sale to buy all filters and new engine oil. As the service history was abit pore. Bit mentioning the on board display was saying engine oil over full. So 7.5lt Castrol later only half way up the dip stick and...... The faults still there! Why? Do the 08 e70 have a level sensor? Or do I have to reset somethin? All ideas would be brilliant. |

Engine oil level fault help please.

Did it say the engine oil was over filled before the oil change, after, or both? The dipstick is your friend. I believe the best practice for an oil change is to fill to 1/2-2/3 on the min to max, then run the engine. Recheck the dipstick and fill to max. I have the same X5. If it were me, I would make sure the oil level was somewhere between min and max and drive for a while to see if the warning goes away. Otherwise you may be able to clear that warning with a scanner. The “oil level over filled” warning is a contact/no contact type of sensor like a brake pad sensor I believe but it’s possible it has gone bad. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |

It can take a couple days for the electronic sensor to get things right - unsure if that indicates a malfunction. I could see how it needs an average reading with some temperature data points to get an accurate reading. Hopefully it clears up for you.

Does that mean I have to remove the sump? Or is it screwed in the side? Thanks for the help all.

When you change your oil, you'll see it. Its 3 screws on the bottom face of the oil pan. Don't take it out until you've drained your oil!
