2008 4.8 160k w/Vanos Issue. E53 owner, should I stay far away?
Hey guys I've owned an E53 4.4 for a couple years, first BMW (learning experience indeed, must be like first marriage)
Anyway found local 08 4.8 for pretty cheap. He's asking 3900 but I think if I show up with cash get for 3200. I'll provide link below. Just wanted to know your thoughts and opinions. Might go take a look Sunday or Monday. I have INPA and all the other BMW software that I use on E53 as well as a Foxwell. https://boston.craigslist.org/nos/pt...150821122.html

I'd probably do it. That looks fairly well loaded (4-zone climate, heated steering wheel + front + rear seats, active suspension just from the pics). The N62TU has some trouble areas but is overall pretty decent and honestly better than the M62TU you had before. The VANOS codes worry me - I'd look into them. Check the oil and make sure there's no signs of metal before buying. Also check the last time the water pump has been done (and coolant pipe under the intake), if the valve stem seals have ever been done, and the alternator bracket gasket. My guess is most, if not all, of that has been addressed at this point. So far my N62TU has been rock solid while my old N52 threw a rod, go figure! (And my old M62 in my 540i has been nothing but amazing.)
