35d transmission fluid - 4 litres out 2.5 goes in

Did a gearbox oil drain, sump change and fill in my 2010 35d. Measured 4 litres out. Changed the sump, refilled to the fill hole which took 2.5 litres, ran it through the gears N-R-1-2. Could only put a few hundred millilitres in. Thought it strange.

Took it for a slow drive using all 6 of the gears, and still at the same level, i.e. oil was coming out the fill hole.

So have I done something wrong or do I assume it was overfilled by the previous owner/ service-agent? Looking at some YouTube vids, 2.5 litres seems to be a reasonable amount...

And you checked the level while engine still running?

No, engine off. Obviously a bit warmer after the drive but still around the 40°C mark.

Well that explains. Oil level has to be checked with engine running, oil temp 30-50 C.

This. The engine must be running and in park.

I was looking at a differnt page.

Anyone know what does this mean??

To set the correct level, it is mandatory that the service function "Transmission control unit: oil adjustment" is performed using the diagnosis system.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission.

Yes, it means run that function from ISTA. All it does is wait for the transmission to hit the correct temperature window and have you verify the level; I believe it can be safely skipped provided you top off the transmission fluid at the proper temperature.
