Currently working on it. The fix is replacing the whole engine with a used one :-/

Is it still worth to change a new engine mine is from 2007 with 270.000km on it

depends on what the new motor costs and what you will pay to install it.


But short answer is most likely NOT worth it.

+1. It's a personal decision. We're replacing the engine ourselves and that almost doesn't seem worth it

Update on my car, and yes the chain has been broken so the motor has to be replaced. Not going to do that with a 2007 e70 with 270000km on it. Going to sell it as is

I have sold the car, this makes the end of my bmw story. I have ordered a Porsche Cayenne so won’t be seeing me on this forum anymore.
I have had many years good experiences with my X5 some small malfunctions and enjoyed driving the car. But how it died on me i really didn’t it expect it could happen like that.

13 years and 270,000 km. Not exactly infant mortality!


Still, definitely a bummer. A $50 part takes it all down.


I wonder if it was a chain issue, a guide issue, or a lubrication issue....

Usually it's the lower chain which snaps. Long maintenance intervals don't help. There is a way to check and estimate how much the lower chain has stretched if you remove the belt tensioner and and open a plug at the side of the timing cover (Nr.6).
