CEL 3EED

Hey all,

I have a low mileage, 50k, E70 diesel. A few weeks ago I picked up the vehicle from Hansel BMW in Santa Rosa after having the SCR active tank replaced, due to multiple codes that focused on the in tank heater. Thanks to the extended emissions warranty it was covered.

Saturday, before the early Sunday am evacuation due to the Glass fire, the vehicle threw a new CEL. The code is 3EED and despite extensive searching I have been unable to determine what the code specifically refers to so that I can plan on addressing and fixing. Whenever I do find reference to the 3EED code it is associated with a number of other codes and the other codes are what get addressed and repaired.

Yesterday, I called the local and highly recommended indy shop to request bringing it in for a diagnosis. I was told that the 3EED code refers to a problem with the DEF system and was told to bring it back to the dealership. Since I never bring a vehicle into the dealership without knowing for sure what the issue is I am asking if there is anyone on the forum who can help me by letting me know specifically what this code indicates.

Thanking in advance whomever responds!

Googling this code comes up with a reference to power management. Like you say, there is a jumble of info related to this code. Reading some of the posts makes me think a connector was not seated totally when they replaced the active tank. You have a couple of heating circuits on the front right of the engine bay and the plugs can be a bit reluctant to "click home". I could be wrong but it would be a good starting point to check everything is plugged in, you may have to remove the fender liner to see the connections to the active tank. G/L!

I had that code pop up once. Cleared it and it has never come back. This was probably 1-2 years ago. May try clearing the code and see what happens.

TRIX5 Thank you for your comments. As soon as I can return to my home and garage that is a good idea and I certainly will follow the advice.

Mistercamp Thank you for the personal experience. Your advice certainly makes sense. There is nothing to lose and if, like you say, it doesn’t come back, worry over.

The post I found traced the code back to the CCV tube which has a heater. Since your case didn't involve that part (unless there was some reason to remove the lower air intake duct) it might be a similar power user somewhere else which could be the active tank.

Seem to remember mine popping up in relation to some work I had some with the DDE or battery. If it does come back, I would see what the test plan in ISTA says. May give more insight into what triggers the code.
