Something fell out while removing trans cover. Need help identifying.

Hello. New member and new to BMW. Picked up a X5 e70 and while removing the cover for transmission to service, a weird plastic part fell out. Seemed like it was sitting on the cover. Didn't seem like it popped out of anything while removing cover.

Here are some pics. I need help identifying it and what its for, and how to get it back where it belongs.

Don't think it's part of the pan. It has hinges and looks to open and close something. It was really clean. No oil and very little dust. I'm guessing it fell off somewhere from above the transmission onto the protective transmission cover.

Looked all along the transmission area while I had pan and mechatronic unit off. This piece didn't seem to fit anywhere around transmission area. I'm a noob so I could be wrong.

Ah. Looking at it, I noted it wasnt dripping ATF. Your choice of "fell OUT" seemed to indicate it was inside something...

Anyway, bump- see who can guess...

I think that piece goes under the pollen filters. But I could be wrong.
