2012 CIC stopped working

I have a 2012 that's been wonderful in the few months I've owned it now. Everything was working fine, stopped to get a drink at a store. Came out, started it and noticed no screen, no chime, no radio, no nothing.

I checked every fuse I could find in the front and back and I can't find anything blown. I assume the CIC unit itself is dead, since the radio doesn't work.

A couple of questions :

1) Any other things I can try, other than fuses?

2) Is this vehicle specific, meaning does the data it pulls come from itself or somewhere else? The reason I ask is I would consider replacing it with one from another car, but probably not if it's going to bring over all the other car's info and data.

3) If it's bad, can I put the Android/Car Play system in, or do those systems pull info from the CIC system? Not sure if the CIC system is just pulling info from another computer and the Android/Car Play options are pulling from that same thing, so they'll work with a dead unit because they are bypassing the old unit completely.

4) If it's bad, anyone in the US that repairs them that has a good reputation?

I checked the battery and it was 12.3V sitting still, 14.2V while running, so I'm assuming we're all okay on the battery. It's a BMW AGM battery and was installed Sept of 18 so probably not far from needing to replace that, which is what made me start checking it.

Not sure how much help this will be, but try reading through my thread here https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...rebooting.html

Ultimately I had to replace the CIC. Maybe you'll have better luck

Thanks for the link! Looks like there's no easy fix. Seems to be a lot of data stored on the actual system, and I don't have the ability to code another unit. Since data is coming from that, the aftermarket isn't going to work either.

I guess I'll search for someone that offers the coding service and see if I can locate one.

Since you've opened them up before, what do you think the chances are that it's a blown power supply in the unit? I assume it's got it's own power supply to drive the hard drive?

I took a little deeper look into it. I checked the power at the connector going into the back of the unit and it was over 14V, so there's definitely power going into the unit. There are several boards in the case, and the bottom board has a red LED burning, so there's power to something in there. I checked the 15A fuse in the back that's only visible when you pull the plug and it tested okay, so with good power coming in, the fuse on the unit good, it's got to be an electrical component on a board failure, a power supply internal to the unit (if there is one) issue, or a bad hard drive.

I put a stethoscope on the front of the hard drive and powered the car on and off a couple of times. I don't believe the HDD is spinning. That could be a bad HDD or it could be something else internal is failing which won't let the hard drive spin. Not sure without breaking the case open, which will be the next step.

If that sparks any thoughts, please share!

Do you have comfort access? I remember on my old E70 that had CAS it had a short circuit and the CIC did not work.

I do, and that has recently stopped working on the drivers side. Guess I better resolve that quickly.

Yes you need to resolve quickly, they can short circuit, overheat or even lead to a fire.

Dealership did my for free as they melted the handle when they were troubleshooting. The CAS issue threw off all my electronics at the time.
