Does E70 X5M intercooler makes noise?

I have this noise coming from the passenger side intercooler area. It's intermittent and sounds like metal knocking or bearing whining. When I took off the air filter and touches the intercooler, I can feel it vibrate as the noise continues on.

I was under the impression that intercooler consists of metal fins to cool intake air, and that there isn't any moving parts in it.

Maybe this is a turbo noise?

Not too sure but I'll take an audio recording of the noise once my new air filter comes in and I open up all the plastic bits again.

Just wondering if anybody's experienced this strange noise on an E70 V8.

It mostly comes after engine shut off after a good 30 minutes drive.

I guess it could be a vibration transmitted from the water pump or possibly some sort of restriction causing a noise?

Could be. But the sound is more akeen to metallic spinning. Not the good kind either. More like a metallic fan with a failed bearing. The noise comes and goes. And mostly happens after the car is switched off.

I'm going to try flushing the engine next week with Liqui Moly Engine flush, followed by fresh oil filter change, and then add an additive like Liqui Moly Ceratech.

Also starting next week, whenever I drive the X5, I'm going to do a 5 minute idle before shutting it down to allow oil to flow through the turbo parts.

Hopefully that'll help with the noise.

I sure hate to have to replace one of the turbos.

You have a turbo cooling pump that will run after the car is shut off, I believe.

Is that what you are hearing?

Looks like you may have a few pumps (!)

Main coolant pump; turbo cooling pump AND an intercooler cooling pump (double !)

might be useful...

Yeah, the S63 has something around 5 water pumps. I don't think the noise Maruzo is talking about is normal though - it will run the fans & the electric pumps after the engine is off but all you should hear is fan/air noise.

The weird thing is, I can sometimes hear it when the X5 is idling. Not very loudly.

But when the engine is off, the noise will come on after a minute. Then it gets louder and more frequent.

Then it goes away in about 5 minutes time.

My plan of action for next week is to take the air box off and find a long screw driver and tap every surface of all the nearby accessory units until I find one where the noises are coming from.

Then replace that part and see if that takes care of it.
