Hmmm. Maybe the convo should be about why you think you have a bad cat.

catalytic converter
I gutted out the internal honeycomb of my cats since they were melted in due to poor maintenance of the previous owner. I need to replace them with new ones since I need smog in my state. Question is how many cat converters do I have on my 2007 BMW x5, 4.8L. Thanks for any help.

One comment.... not sure what you mean by 'poor maintenance'.
Only issues with air/fuel ruin cats...did you fix those issues? Funny story. MANY years ago I needed a cat for a VW scirocco. Went to a junk yard, dump young kid, and asked if they had any. Counter guy looks me over, says 'cant sell them, thats illegal'. I was crestfallen. Incredulous.... 'really?!?'..... he locked eyes and asked "maybe you mean the pre-muffler?". I pause a beat, and said "Oh, yeah- I need a pre-muffler". |

You have 2 catalytic converters. They are the ones attached to the exhaust manifolds. Everything after that is mufflers/resonators.
